The large majority of consumers, or 88 percent, plan to spend less money overall this Halloween, with nearly 47 percent planning to buy less candy, more than 35 percent using last year’s decorations and nearly 17 percent making their own costumes instead of buying.

The survey also showed that fewer people plan to celebrate the holiday this year and those who do plan to celebrate will participate in fewer activities. And young adults, who have been big spenders in the past several years, said the study, plan to spend nearly $20 less than they did last Halloween.
