Most if not all state and county offices are shut down. So you probably won’t be able to visit the DMV or any district justice offices today. Many people are still wondering if they will be able to do their banking still, begging the important question “are banks open on Martin Luther King day 2010?”

It’s a day of remembering and paying tribute to Dr. King for his achievements in working to eliminate racism, prejudice and segregation in the United States. It’s honored by all 50 states, which close down important public offices for the federal holiday.

So, the answer is no to the question, “are banks are open on Martin Luther King day 2010?” You can still do your internet banking online 24/7 if you choose to or visit ATM’s, but you won’t be able to go inside a bank to do transactions in person today.

“Crooked Houses,” as they’re called, are really just playhouses for kids, but they’ve gained some attention after being featured on shows like Jon & Kate Plus 8 and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. According to the website KidsCrookedHouse.com, the structures are award-winning wooden playhouses that parents can custom design to suit their children’s needs.

Kids Crooked Houses are designed to be more fun than the average playhouse parents buy for their kids because they’re brightly-colored and “crooked” — meaning they look more like the houses you’d see in a Dr. Seuss book than in the suburbs. Prices of the crooked houses range from $1,249 to $4,449 for those “double deluxe” houses.

For a more wallet-friendly gift, the same company makes “slims,” or graphic removable wall stickers that add pizzazz to your child’s room.

Trick or treat times 2009

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

This Saturday the 31st of October, 2009 is All Hallows Eve. It is the last day of Summer on our calendar and the last day of the year on the ancient Celtic calendar. According to Celtic lore, the barrier between this world and the next is unusually thin on this night. It was so thin that spirits, good and evil, could pass through and enter our world. To ward off the bad spirits, people dressed up as evil spirits to keep from being haunted. This is the origin ofthe practice of dressing up on Hallowe’en.

What Time is Trick or Treating?
A suggested time for trick or treating would be between 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm for children 8 years and under, getting them home in time for supper and bedtime.
For children 8 – 12 years old, anytime between 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm is good, provided the neighborhood is safe, and adult supervision is provided.
Kids over 12 have a little more leeway, depending on the situations and adult guidance.

Safety Tips for Trick or Treating With Small Children
Children under a certain age should always be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Costumes and masks should not cover the eyes or ears, or restrict movement.
Costumes should have reflective tape on them, and be accompanied with a flashlight and whistle. Glow sticks are handy to have in their pockets as well.

Safety Tips for Older Trick or Treater’s
If your child is old enough to go alone, agree on a neighborhood route.
Agree on who the child is going with and make sure they have contact numbers and a cell phone with them.
Set a firm time as to when they will be home.
Stress to the child about the importance of not talking to strangers, or accepting rides from them.
Always check the candy over before they begin eating it. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.

Roasted pumpkin seeds

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

Pumpkin or other similar squash seed can be used in this recipe. Seeds are highly underrated and under-consumed.

Roasted pumpkin seedsNative Americans in this area used to eat a lot of squash seeds. They toasted and roasted them. Sometimes they ground them to make a mush. They found eating the shells helped to get rid of internal parasites and worms due to the internal cleansing ability of the shells.

Ingredients
One medium sized pumpkin
Salt
Olive oil
Method

1 Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut open the pumpkin and use a strong metal spoon to scoop out the insides. Separate the seeds from the stringy core. Rinse the seeds.

2 In a small saucepan, add the seeds to water, about 2 cups of water to every half cup of seeds. Add a half tablespoon of salt for every cup of water (more if you like your seeds saltier). Bring to a boil. Let simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and drain.

3 Spread about a tablespoon of olive oil over the bottom of a roasting pan. Spread the seeds out over the roasting pan, all in one layer. Bake on the top rack until the seeds begin to brown, 10-20 minutes. When browned to your satisfaction, remove from the oven and let the pan cool on a rack. Let the seeds cool all the way down before eating. Either crack to remove the inner seed (a lot of work and in my opinion, unnecessary) or eat whole.

Pumpkin decorating

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (1)

The art of pumpkin carving is a centuries-old tradition, dating back to an ancient Celtic holiday called Samhain, meaning summer’s end. Over time, the tradition has evolved and the carved pumpkin (or Jack-o-Lantern) has become one of the most prominent symbols of Halloween.

Pumpkin decoratingWhen you buy a pumpkin, consider picking a pumpkin patch that supports a cause. Even better, have your kids help you make this decision. (Boy Scouts, Habitat For Humanity, etc. are some of the pumpkin patch causes I’ve seen.)

Decorating a pumpkin can be just as fun.

Recycled Pumpkin Art: Glean objects from the recycling bin. Use these recyclables to decorate your pumpkin! Attach everything from magazine pictures to plastic bottle lids. Glue works but if you use washable glue, it won’t last long outside.

Decorate with Paint or Markers: Paint your pumpkin with a face, patterns, designs, or shapes. Again, don’t use washable paints and markers, the color lasts about 5 minutes.

Print a pumpkin coloring page to decorate.
