federal government closed tuesday

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

According to the latest OPM operating status, the Federal Government is closed Tuesday, February 9, 2010. The announcement comes due to the news that there is a weather forecast for high snowfall in the Washington, DC area on Tuesday, just days after a huge snow storm blanketed the nation’s capital. This will mean that all Federal agencies in Washington, DC will be closed on Tuesday. Nonemergency employees will also be given an excused absence for the number of hours they were normally scheduled to work, except for those on leave without pay for military duty, workers’ comp, suspensation or other nonpay status.

Telework and Emergency employees must still report for duty as normal. Emergency employees are still expected to report to their job on time, while telework employees must work from their usual telework sites specified in their agreements for work. These announcements were made just several hours ago at 6PM Monday evening.

The United States Office of Personnel Management made the announcement via their website here, which also says that the OPM Operating Status for Tuesday is Pending. Additionally, other sections of the OPM site are not functioning due to the high volume of visits to the site to see the news that the Federal Government is closed Tuesday.

Parade Of Flesh Announces Initial Bro Fest 2010 Lineup
We’re big fans of what John Iskander is doing around town with the shows that he’s booking under his Parade of Flesh moniker. But you already knew that.

What you might not have known, however, is that Iskander’s been planning another post-SXSW bash–as he’s been known to do in the past. Won’t be called South by South Flesh this year, though. For legal reasons, Iskander’s been asked to change that name. And he’s replacing it–who knows why–with this name: Bro Fest 2010. Which is awkward at best.

Fortunately, the bill for the show, which will take place on Sunday, March 21, at the Double Wide, isbetter than the name. This week, Iskander announced his initial 13 band lineup. And it’s a good ‘un, featuring the likes of Dum Dum Girls, Woven Bones, Sleepy Sun and Those Darlins.

“I’m still waiting on three or four more acts, too,” Iskander tells DC9 by phone. “I’m just being finicky about it.”

Fair enough. After the jump, check the press release and the already-announced acts for the two-stage affair. Meanwhile, tickets to the event will soon be available at Parade of Flesh’s Frontgate Tickets page.

Well, the heroic anti-whaling activists of the Sea Shepherd (and stars of Animal Planet’s “Whale Wars”) have made the headlines once again. This time they claim the Japanese rammed their speed boat, the Ady Gil, in an “unprovoked attack,” breaking it in half.

Given that former Greenpeacer Paul Watson’s express purpose in tailing the Japanese whaling fleet through the Southern Ocean is to harass them, I highly doubt the attack was unprovoked.

Still, there’s nothing like some high seas dog fighting to make good television. I’ve got to hand it to the programming execs at Animal Planet who came up with this — they knew what they were doing. All they needed to do is add some camera crews to Paul Watson’s entourage, and then sit back and watch as all hell broke loose.

You can forget about any substantive argument for or against whaling, because that’s not what Watson, his crew, or the show is about. And that’s what’s most disappointing about the whole thing. Here are people glued to the TV set watching a show about a meaningless battle over a few minke whales in the Southern Ocean. Meanwhile our oceans are being polluted and acidified, and humans are gobbling up its fish (not whales) at an unprecedented rate.

I wonder what goes on in Paul Watson’s head, I really do — probably something akin to whatever went through Richard Heene’s before he launched a helium-filled flying saucer into the sky over Colorado and pretended his son was inside it. Regardless, I’m waving the white flag. It’s clear the media loves a diva, and they’ve found a worthy one in Watson.

To be fair, the Japanese ‘research’ activities are just as suspect as Watson’s crusade. I just hope that as folks watch this titillating little drama unfold, they can find enough time in their busy TV schedules to worry about where their seafood is coming from.

U.S.-bound air travellers from 14 countries considered either state sponsors of terrorism or “countries of interest” began facing tougher screening measures on Monday, prompted by the attempt to bomb a plane flying to Detroit last month.

The new rules mean that “every individual flying into the U.S. from anywhere in the world travelling from or through nations that are state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest will be required to go through enhanced screening,” the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement on Sunday.

The State Department lists Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria as state sponsors of terrorism. The countries of interest include Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen.

Passengers from those countries will now be subject to enhanced screening techniques including body scans, pat-downs and a thorough search of carry-on luggage.

Empire State Building 381 New York, U.S.A
*Guinness World Records recognized the CN Tower at one time as both the world’s tallest free-standing and world’s tallest building. However, the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has disputed the designation of the comunications tower as a building.

The world’s tallest skyscraper formally opened Monday in Dubai.
The Burj Khalifa is more than 160 storeys high, rising 828 metres into the sky.

The exact height of the new tower was kept under wraps by developer Emaar Properties until the tower was opened by Dubai’s ruler.

The structure is about 250 metres higher than Toronto’s CN Tower.

Thousands of residents and tourists gathered around the base of the massive building for its opening.

The building is apparently named in honour of Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi and the president of the United Arab Emirates.
$9 million US per floor

The building cost about $1.5 billion US to build, or about $9 million US per floor.

Apartments in the building sold for $1,900 US per square foot at their peak, but prices have fallen by half in the wake of the financial woes that hit Dubai.

The city-state had to turn to Abu Dhabi for about $25 billion US in bailouts last year to cover amassed debts of state-linked firms.

While developer Emaar Properties is partly government-owned, it is not known if the firm got any bailout money.

“Crises come and go,” said Emaar chairman Mohammad Alabbar in an interview prior to the building’s formal opening. ” You have to move on. Because if you stop taking decisions, you stop growing.”

Alabbar said the building is about 90 per cent sold.

newark airport lockdown

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

Terminal C at Newark Liberty Airport terminal was locked down and flights were delayed after a man walked the wrong way through a checkpoint exit.

The Transportation Safety Administration said police are still searching for the man, according to CNN.

The man entered the “sterile” section of the airport and apparently bypassed security screeners by going the wrong way through a checkpoint exit.

Passengers were herded into public areas and Terminal C was locked down while security staff reviewed video to see exactly where the man, who may not have been screened, had gone.

The potential security breach comes as the TSA announced it was beefing up security with random searches, with extra screening measures for passengers from “countries of interest” such as Yemen.

The incident is reportedly causing arrival delays Sunday night.

british airways strike update

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

Breaking news reports claim that British Airways’ cabin crew will strike just in time for the busy Christmas travel period.

The cabin crew voted today (Monday, Dec. 14) to strike over the week of Christmas, which could be potentially devastating to thousands of passengers and the airline. The 12-day strike will start on Dec. 22 in London’s Heathrow airport.

In a message from BA’s chief executive Willie Walsh, “Let me say immediately we will do everything we can to assist you at what will clearly be a very difficult time if strikes go ahead. We are working hard on contingency plans, and will announce them as soon as they are finalised.”

british airways strike updateAs per the British Airways strike update the members of Unite, the cabin crew union, still has not changed their mind about the strike yet the leaders of the union will meet Willie Welsh, for an ‘unconditional’ discussion. Official sources of Unite stated that their general secretaries, Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley will represent the union in the meeting. The meeting has a great significance for the union as well as the company and they are hopeful about a positive turn out of this meeting.

British Airways and the unions have clashed in recent months over restructuring plans and added workloads. As a result, 92.5% of the union’s members voted to go on strike until an agreement can be made between the union and the airline.

British Airways recently announced it would cut jobs and freeze pay by March 31, 2010. The airline currently employs 13,500 cabin crew, (11,500 work at Heathrow).

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

time person of the year 2009 picked Ben Bernanke. This is the second win for him, as he and everyone else in the universe won in 2006 when “You” was the person of the year.

TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel called the Federal Reserve “the most powerful, least understood government force shaping our lives” as he revealed his magazine’s choice live on TODAY Wednesday morning.

“He was the great scholar of the Depression who saw another depression coming, and did everything he could to stop it,” Stengel said of Bernanke. “He’s a controversial figure. He’s a Republican appointed by a Democratic president. It’s a really interesting combination of factors.”

Finalists for Time’s Person of the Year, to be announced Wednesday on NBC’s “Today” show:

1. Ben Bernanke, Fed chairman

2. Usain Bolt, Jamaican sprinter

3. Steve Jobs, Apple CEO
