The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. announced Thursday that it will reopen its investigation into the 1981 drowning death of Natalie Wood. “Recently Sheriff’s homicide investigators were contacted by persons who stated they had additional information about the Natalie Wood Wagner drowning,” the office claimed in a statement. “Due to the additional information, Sheriff’s homicide bureau has decided to take another look at the case.”

Authorities didn’t provide further details late Thursday and said a news conference on the matter will be held Friday at 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET).

Last year, the actress’ sister, Lana Wood, and the captain of the yacht on which Wood sailed with her husband, actor Robert Wagner, had asked the sheriff’s office to reopen the case.

On Thursday, L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy Benjamin Grubb couldn’t say whether the sister and the yacht captain have prompted the renewed investigation.

“I don’t know if that’s related, but that’s what the press conference is about tomorrow,” Grubb told CNN.

Notorious Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, the most wanted man in the entire world, has been killed, the country’s rebel government and ABC News claim.

The National Transition Council said Moammar Gadhafi is dead following a battle in Sirte, which finally fell to the rebels today after weeks of tough fighting.

Gadhafi, 69, had been on the run for several weeks after being chased out of the capital Tripoli, the capital of Libya, by NATO bombers and rebel troops.

He had been believed to be hiding in the vast Libyan desert while calling on his supporters to rise up and sweep the rebel “dogs” away, but to no avail.

NATO said its fighters struck a convoy of Gadhafi’s loyalists fleeing Sirte, but could not confirm Gadhafi was in the convoy, the Associated Press reported.

A DISTRAUGHT mother listened on a mobile phone as her teenage daughter was eaten alive by a brown bear and its three cubs.

Olga Moskalyova, 19, gave an horrific hour-long running commentary on her own death in three separate calls as the wild animals killed her.

She screamed: “Mum, the bear is eating me! Mum, it’s such agony. Mum, help!’”

Her mother Tatiana said that at first thought she was joking. “But then I heard the real horror and pain in Olga’s voice, and the sounds of a bear growling and chewing.”

She added: “I could have died then and there from shock.”

Unknown to Tatiana, the bear had already killed her husband Igor Tsyganenkov – Olga’s stepfather – by overpowering him, breaking his neck and smashing his skull. Olga, a trainee psychologist, saw the ­attack on her stepfather in tall grass and reeds by a river in Russia and fled for 70 yards before the mother bear grabbed her leg.

As the creature toyed with her, she managed to call Tatiana several times during the prolonged attack. Tatiana rang her husband – not knowing he was ­already dead – but got no answer.

She alerted the police and relatives in the village of Termalniy, near Petropavlovsk Kamchatskiy, in the extreme east of Siberia.

She begged them to rush to the river where the pair had gone to retrieve a fishing rod that Igor had left.

In a second call, a weak Olga gasped: “Mum, the bears are back. She came back and brought her three babies. They’re… eating me”.

Finally, in her last call – almost an hour after the first – Olga sensed she was on the verge of death.

With the bears having apparently left her to die, she said: “Mum, it’s not hurting anymore. I don’t feel the pain. Forgive me for everything, I love you so much.”

The call cut off and that was the last Tatiana heard from her ­daughter. Half an hour later, Igor’s brother Andrei arrived with police to find the mother bear still devouring his body. Badly mauled Olga was also dead.

Six hunters were sent in by the emergency services to kill the mother bear and her three cubs.

The double killing is the latest in a spate of bear attacks across ­Russia, as the hungry animals seek food in areas where people have ­encroached and settled on their former habitat.

A weeping Tatiana said that Olga had everything to look forward to, and was happy with her life and boyfriend Stepan.

“My daughter was such fun. She was so cheerful, friendly, and warm,” said Tatiana.

“She had graduated from music school, and just days before the bear attack she got her driving ­licence.”

Her husband and daughter are due to be buried today.

Their engagement, announced in January, will not end as planned – in a late summer wedding on the one-year anniversary of when they started dating.

The couple confirmed the split themselves.

“I am so sad because I really do love her,” James, who has been married three times before, tells People. “The distance between us was just too much.”

Canadian New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton said he will take a “temporary” leave of absence for health reasons.

Layton, speaking at times with a strained voice alongside his wife, NDP MP Olivia Chow, vowed to return to his position when Parliament resumes on Sept. 19.

“I’m going to fight this cancer now, so I can be back to fight for families when Parliament resumes,” on Sept. 19, he said at a press conference in Toronto Monday afternoon, and quickly sending out the same message on Twitter.

In a mid-afternoon statement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of Mr. Layton’s temporary leave of absence, sending his “heartfelt support to Jack, Olivia and their family.”

“I salute the courage Mr. Layton continues to show in his fight against cancer,” Mr. Harper said. “We are all heartened by Jack’s strength and tireless determination, which with Mr. Layton will never be in short supply.” 
 
Mr. Layton has been dogged by health problems in recent years.

In March, he underwent surgery for a hip fracture. His health problems didn’t keep him from the spring campaign trail, where he appeared at election events with a cane.

In February 2010, he publicly revealed that he was being treated for prostate cancer, the same illness that struck his father, former Conservative MP Robert Layton.

“I’m a fighter and I’m going to beat this,” he said at the time. My treatment plan is now under way and everything is under way. I’m feeling good.”

In 2006, he admitted to having surgery at the private Shouldice Hosptial for a hernia in the 1990s. He has also suffered from appendicitis.

A former Toronto city councillor, Mr. Layton was named party leader in 2003 and elected MP for Toronto-Danforth in 2004.

Congressman David Wu is facing calls for his resignation over a young woman’s reported accusation that she had an “unwanted sexual encounter” with the Democrat three weeks after his election victory in November.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is asking for an ethics investigation of Rep. David Wu of Oregon, who has resisted calls to resign following a news report alleging he made sexual advances toward the daughter of a longtime campaign donor.

The allegations against Wu, a seven-term Democratic congressman, were published Friday by The Oregonian newspaper in Portland.

Wu, who became the first Chinese-American member of Congress when he was elected in 1998, disclosed earlier this year that he is on medication and getting treatment for mental health issues. He apologized for his erratic behavior, including e-mailing a photo of himself wearing a tiger costume.

Reality TV star Kristin Cavallari and Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler have called off their engagement, with Cutler the one who reportedly did the dumping.

After just 10 months together, Cavallari and Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler have called off their engagement, a source confirms to PEOPLE.

“She got dumped,” says another source. “She’s absolutely devastated. She can’t believe this is happening.”

“She was planning her dream wedding, the date was set, the location – everything was set,” the source adds.

“She’s in shock that the dream wedding she was planning is going to end this way.”

The couple, who became engaged in April, were planning a spring wedding, and even completed their wedding registry, which was revealed last week.

While the two have yet to confirm or deny the reports, Cavallari, 24, hinted at the split on Twitter Sunday.
