Chicago Cubs Sign Xavier Nady

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent outfielder Xavier Nady.

The base salary of the deal is $3.3 million, with bonuses that could make it worth as much as $5.35 million.

Nady, 31, missed 2009 after his second Tommy John surgery, but had his best season in 2008, when he hit .305 with 25 home runs and 97 runs batted in between Pittsburgh and the Yankees.

In theory, Nady is coming in to play right field for Kosuke Fukudome when there’s a left-hander on the mound—Fukudome only batted .167 against lefties in 2009. However, the right-handed hitting Nady has historically been much better against right handed pitchers, hitting .020 higher and having a .050 higher slugging percentage against right-handers.

The Cubs chose Nady over other free agents like former-Cub Reed Johnson and former-White Sox Jermaine Dye to provide depth to the bench.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The Baltimore Ravens have left linebacker Paul Kruger inactive for their playoff game against the New England Patriots.

Kruger, a second-round draft pick, has joined with Michael Oher and Lardarius Webb to make significant contributions as rookies this season. He played in the last eight games of the regular season and had an interception in overtime against Pittsburgh in the penultimate week.

Also inactive for the Ravens on Sunday were receiver Justin Harper, defensive backs Marcus Paschal and Keith Fitzhugh, offensive linemen David Hale and Tony Moll and defensive lineman Kelly Talavou. John Beck was the third quarterback.

The Patriots left inactive wide receiver Isaiah Stanback, cornerback Terrence Wheatley, running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, linebacker Thomas Williams, defensive lineman Ron Brace and offensive linemen Rich Ohrnberger, Dan Connolly and Mark LeVoir.

Linebacker kruger

At the half: Ravens 24, Patriots 7
Maybe in the past, this was the spot where you expect the Patriots to come back.

It’s hard to see — outside of blind faith — where you’d conjure that confidence now. Unless you’re hoping for a banged-up Joe Flacco to hand New England the game.

This one ain’t complicated. The Patriots got blocked up on the 83-yard touchdown run by Ray Rice. And then, they threw up all over their shoes. Two picks and a strip sack add up to 17 Baltimore points, and here we are.

Perhaps the greatest indication on what’s happening here came on the final six plays of the first half. There was no pretense about what Baltimore was doing there. Running the ball, running the clock, and trying to get in the locker room with a 17-point lead intact. And the Ravens run it six times, churn two first downs out, and take a knee.

That’s a physical football team right there, folks, that’s punched the home team in the mouth, and has that opponent reeling.

Here’s why coming back is going to be very, very difficult … The Patriots offense has 61 yards of total offense. Kevin Faulk has 61 yards from scrimmage. That means, outside of Faulk, the Patriots have netted a grand total of zero yards. And that offense had to fight like hell to get in the end zone, even when gifted a turnover (Why in the world didn’t John Harbaugh challenge there?) to set them up on the Raven 16.

The Ravens, to be fair, aren’t exactly going up and down the field. But they’re excellent when playing with a lead, and they have a big one now. Chances are, the air comes out of the ball, and on both sides, Baltimore turns this one into a street fight.

With the way Flacco’s playing (2-of-6 for 9 yards, INT), I’m not totally counting New England out. But it’s close.

Pat White, the Miami Dolphins’ Rookie Quarterback from West Virginia, was injured on a 3rd down play against the Pittsburgh Steelers with 3:05 minutes to go in the 3rd Quarter of Sunday’s game.

White, who was known as a Spread Offense quarterback at West Virginia, was running a version of the Miami Dolphins ‘Wildcat’ System. As he was running to try and pick up a first down, White was hit by two Steeler defenders, but CBS Television replays show it was Steeler Defensive Back Ike Taylor’s helmet-to-shoulder-pad blow that almost immediately froze White as he fell to the ground.

Once White was knocked out of bounds he was immobile. Players from both the Steelers and Dolphins motioned for medical help as White lay on the grass. Play was stopped as trainers and doctors worked to determine White’s condition. After a few minutes a flat-bed cart was brought out and White, who’s body was placed in a restraining apparatus, was carried off the field.

Pat White was the first pick of the Dolphins at the 2009 NFL Draft and selected for his position flexibility. White’s also a winner At West Virginia, White was an 18-win, 2 loss starter over his four year career, with a 4-0 bowl record.

In the Dolphins Offense, White occasionally spelled starting Quarterback Chad Pennington, as was done when White was injured Sunday.

eagles vs cowboys

The Eagles vs. Cowboys game will decide the NFC East champion. This is the second Eagles vs. Cowboys game in 2010, and this one will hold all the marbles for the winner. Both Dallas and Philadelphia can clinch the NFC East with a win on Sunday, but there also exists the possibility that they could clinch the #2 seed in the NFC Playoffs. That puts everything on the line on Sunday, making the Eagles vs. Cowboys a must watch for NFC fans.

The Philadelphia at Dallas game has a 1:15 P.M. PST (4:15 P.M. EST) start time, and will be broadcast on FOX around the country. Philadelphia comes into the game with an 11-4 record on the season, while Dallas has posted a 10-5 record so far. Philadelphia has been one of the hotter teams in football lately and would like nothing more than to cap off their season at 12-4 with a win. Dallas on the other hand, is trying to quiet the analysts stating they have fallen apart, and by winning the NFC East they could do just that.

The reason that the #2 seed is still up in the air is because the Minnesota Vikings have gone cold. They come into Sunday’s games tied with Philadelphia for the second best record in the NFC, but lose the head-to-head tie-breaker with the Eagles if Philadelphia can win on Sunday. There is also a chance that if Minnesota and NFC West winner Arizona loses that Dallas can jump into the #2 seed and really put to bed any critics that they have had this season.

It’s shaping up to be a really good game in Cowboys Stadium, and its good that FOX has this one scheduled for a wide audience. In a divisional rivalry game such as this it is hard to pick a favorite because both teams will be playing with a lot of pride on Sunday. Keep an eye on Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson and Cowboys receiver Miles Austin because the two will be looking to break big catches and reach the end zone quickly.

Game time for the Eagles vs. Cowboys game is 1:15 P.M. PST (4:15 P.M. EST) on Fox today.

Currently the NFL Playoff scenario favors the division leaders, while a handful of teams can determine their fate by either winning or losing their final game of the season. One such team is the New York Jets who had a major victory over the previously undefeated Indianapolis Colts today. The Colts vs Jets game produced the underdog victory by New York and propelled them towards their playoff destiny. Should the Jets defend Cincinnati next week, they will be assured a playoff spot. The Baltimore Ravens are also looking to seal their fate with a win.

The NFC teams are pretty much set though with Dallas winning against Washington today to get the final playoff spot. Joining Dallas will be the division leaders, last year’s runner-up Cardinals and the Green Bay Packers (10-5). Now it’ll just be a matter of jockeying for position.

The AFC & NFC division leaders right now are as follows:

AFC East – New England Patriots (10-5)
AFC North – Cincinnati Bengals (10-5)
AFC South – Indianapolis Colts (14-1)
AFC West – San Diego Chargers (12-3)

NFC East – Philadelphia Eagles (11-4)
NFC North – Minnesota Vikings (11-3)
NFC South – New Orleans Saints (13-2)
NFC West – Arizona Cardinals (10-5)

Things are pretty set in stone in terms of who’s in the playoffs in the NFC…

This is the NFC Playoff Scenario as of right now:

1. New Orleans (13-2)
2. Minnesota (11-3)
3. Philadelphia (11-4)
4. Arizona (10-5)
5. Green Bay (10-5)
6. Dallas (10-5)

With New Orleans’ loss today, it gives the Vikings a shot at taking the #1 seed should they get 3 things in their favor. First, they need to beat the Bears on Monday Night Football tonight. Second, they have to beat the Giants next Sunday, and third they need a New Orleans loss next Sunday. Two of those seem likely, with New Orleans coming off 2 straight losses, less likely to lose their final game.

The Cardinals have a shot to move up a spot in the playoff rankings based on the Vikings. Arizona will also play Green Bay which is currently amongst the playoff teams for the NFC. Things will be interesting based on what Minnesota does in its next few games.

The AFC Playoff Scenario is where things get very interesting. There’s currently five teams who share a 8-7 record competing for the final few playoff spots. Here’s a look at the situation:

1. Indianapolis (14-1)
2. San Diego (12-3)
3. New England (10-5)
4. Cincinnati (10-5)
5. Denver (8-7)
6. New York Jets (8-7)
7. Baltimore (8-7)
8. Houston (8-7)
9. Pittsburgh (8-7)

All of the 5th through 9th ranked teams want in to the playoffs, but only a few will make it. Baltimore and New York Jets can ensure their playoff trips with a win in their week 16 matchups, while the other teams are hoping that’s not the case.

With just one week of NFL football left, fans will be on the edge of their seats to see how the NFL Playoff scenario unfolds. With Indianapolis and New Orleans both being handed their first losses of the season recently, no team is invincible, and it’s anyone’s game heading towards the Superbowl!

Clemson Wins Music City Bowl

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. | C.J. Spiller scored a touchdown and had 172 all-purpose yards in his final college game, leading Clemson to a 21-13 victory Sunday night in the Music City Bowl.

The Tigers (9-5) hadn’t won a bowl since the 2005 Champs Sports Bowl.

Kentucky (7-6) was trying to make program history by winning a fourth straight bowl game. The Wildcats certainly had the home-field advantage, with blue filling nearly two-thirds of the lower bowl at LP Field.

Spiller, the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, scored his 51st career touchdown – a Clemson record – on an 8-yard run with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter to make it 21-13.

Kyle Parker had a touchdown pass the Tigers and Jamie Harper ran for a score.

Nebraska QB Green to See Playing Time in Bowl

SAN DIEGO | Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said freshman quarterback Cody Green will get some playing time in the Holiday Bowl.

Watson said the staff is looking to the future and wants to evaluate Green in a game situation against a good team like Arizona.

Junior Zac Lee has been the starter for much of the season, but was replaced by Green for two games.

The Cornhuskers practiced for two hours Sunday morning at San Diego State University in preparation for Wednesday’s Holiday Bowl.

arsenal vs aston villa live

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

LIVE STREAM SCORE – Is there a live stream online of the Arsenal vs Aston Villa 2009 game? Live streaming scores of the Arsenal vs Aston Villa are available today courtesy of the BBC.

But if you want to watch live streaming video of the game, it’s not possible. Arsenal vs Aston Villa is the latest sporting event subjected to the fake “live streaming video” stories of 2009. The most recent and notable was the Cowboys vs Saints game. During that game, some sites continued to claim to have live streams even after the net was aware they didn’t exist.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa was scoreless in the first half. Now it’s 2-0. BBC reported after the first goal:

“Arsenal goal: Less than 10 minutes after coming on, captain fantastic Cesc Fabregas does the business for his side in sensational style. He wins the free-kick for Richard Dunne’s foul and curls a delicious effort into the top corner from 25 yards out.”

And the following after the second goal:

“Arsenal goal: That is absolutely stunning from Arsenal. James Milner’s hopeless pass forward is picked up by Armand Traore, who sweeps a perfect long ball out to Theo Walcott. This time, the final ball is inch-perfect for Cesc Fabregas, who runs in between two defenders to slot past Brad Friedel. The Gunners’ celebrations are cut short though as Fabregas feels his hamstring before limping back to the halfway line…”

chris henry’s death

Posted by: kevingarden | Comments (0)

Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver Chris Henry’s death on Thursday of this week took the NFL and sports by surprise and brought out the best thoughts expressed about a man who was clearly on his way to a new and brighter life. From Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis, to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the league communicated its collective sadness to the World.

“I think we’re ready to go play football,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “I think it will be a good thing because people are continuing to talk about something that really doesn’t have an effect on us right now. Unfortunately, Chris had been injured and been away from us. It’s a very tragic thing, but the team is moving on.”
