A 16-year-old California girl who is trying to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world is lost at sea.

Abby Sunderland, the Thousand Oaks teenager who is sailing around the world, set off her emergency locater beacons this morning in the southern Indian Ocean. Her latest blog post, on Wednesday, was titled A Rough Few Days.

She had been attempting to sail around the world alone, endured multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds Thursday before conditions briefly abated.

However, her parents lost satellite phone contact early this morning and an hour later were notified by the Australian Coast Guard that both of Sunderland’s EPIRB satellite devices had been activated.

One is apparently is attached to a survival suit or a life raft and meant to be used when a person is in the water or aboard a life raft.

Abby’s father struggled with emotions and said he didn’t know if his daughter was in a life raft or aboard the boat, or whether the boat was upside down.

“Everything seemed to be under control,” Laurence Sunderland said. “But then our call dropped and a hour later the Coast Guard called.”

Abby is hundreds of miles from land. The nearest ship was about 400 miles away. The rescue effort is being coordinated by the French-controlled Reunion Islands and Australia. Sunderland had been sailing in 50- to 60-foot seas and it was dark when the EPIRB devices were activated.

The Sunderlands are asking people to pray for their daughter, a high-school junior from Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Scott Rothstein was found guilty of running a ponzi scheme that took $1.2 billion dollars from investors. Rothstein was sentenced to 50 years in a federal prison.

“I am truly and deeply sorry for what I have done. I don’t expect your forgiveness. I don’t,” Rothstein said in court according to the Sun-Sentinel. “I am ashamed and embarrassed.”

Rothstein was sentenced Wednesday morning by U.S. District Judge James Cohn in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom.

Rothstein, who turns 48 on Thursday, oversaw a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme that collapsed last fall. He was arrested Dec. 1, 2009 after the scheme was exposed. Rothstein’s plan was built on supposedly lucrative investments in faked confidential settlements.

Recall is continuing, after the lastest recall by Chrysler, we now have the GM recall 2010 again.

General Motors is recalling 1.5 million cars and trucks because of a washer-fluid heating system that has caused engine fires, GM said Tuesday.

The voluntary recall, which affects 2006-2009 Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevrolets, GMCs, Hummer and Saturns, involves a problematic electronic heat system that was the subject of another massive recall in 2008.

To remedy the problem, technicians will disable washer-water heater and will pay each owner $100 to make up for the loss of the convenience feature. The system, made by a now-defunct supplier, was designed to spray heated water to clear icy windshields.

“This was a unique technology available from only one supplier, and that supplier has stopped manufacturing, which left no opportunity to collaborate on an improved design,” said Jeff Boyer, executive director of safety for GM. “We want to be clear that the voluntary payment to customers is for the loss of the feature, not the recall.”

GM said it knows of five engine fires caused by the system, but no accidents or injuries.

In the 2008 recall, the heating system was experiencing short circuits that caused under-hood fires, which was remedied by installing an inline fuse. This recall involves a different problem altogether, which prompted GM to opt for removing the systems.

Included in the recall are 2006-2009 Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS and Hummer H2; 2008-2009 Buick Enclave and Cadillac CTS; 2009 Chevrolet Traverse; 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; and 2007-2009 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL, and Saturn Outlook.

The recalled vehicles include 1,365,070 in the United States, 98,794 affected vehicles in Canada, 26,228 in Mexico and 38,093 exports.

In March, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles over major steering problems.

LOS ANGELES — Cadmium has been discovered in the painted design on “Shrek”-themed drinking glasses being sold nationwide at McDonald’s, forcing the burger giant to recall 12 million of the cheap U.S.-made collectibles while dramatically expanding contamination concerns about the toxic metal beyond imported children’s jewelry.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall early Friday, warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses; McDonald’s said it would post instructions on its website next week regarding refunds.

The 16-ounce glasses, being sold for about $2 each as part of a promotional campaign for the movie “Shrek Forever After,” were available in four designs depicting the characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.

In the animated comedy, which debuted May 21 as the latest installment of the successful DreamWorks Animation franchise, the voice of Shrek is performed by Mike Myers of “Austin Powers” fame, Cameron Diaz performs as Princess Fiona, Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots and Eddie Murphy voices Donkey. The movie has been No. 1 at the box office since its release.

The CPSC noted in its recall notice that “long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects.” Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.

In the case of the Shrek-themed glassware, the potential danger would be long-term exposure to low levels of cadmium, which could leach from the paint onto a child’s hand, then enter the body if the child puts that unwashed hand to his or her mouth.

Cadmium can be used to create reds and yellows in paint. McDonald’s USA spokesman Bill Whitman said a pigment in paint on the glasses contained cadmium.

“A very small amount of cadmium can come to the surface of the glass, and in order to be as protective as possible of children, CPSC and McDonald’s worked together on this recall,” said CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson. He would not specify the amounts of cadmium that leached from the paint in tests, but said the amounts were “slightly above the protective level currently being developed by the agency.”

Wolfson said the glasses have “far less cadmium than the children’s metal jewelry that CPSC has previously recalled.”

A Los Angeles based gay porn star went on a workplace rampage that has claimed the life of one person and wounded two others. The victims are all presumed to be the co-workers. The actor, Steven Hill, was recently fired by his employer, Ultima Entertainment, an event that apparently triggered a violent reaction. After the attack, the porn star fled the premises in a Toyota RAV4 SUV and is now the object of a police pursuit.

After killing one person, two employees at the company were wounded in a failed attempt to accost Hill. The murder weapon is said to be a samurai sword the company had on hand as a prop. Media sources that when not performing in pornographic features, Hill worked as a production worker for other movies. Because Hill lost his job and his residence at the same time, early indications suggest that Hill snapped under the pressure. Reports appear to confirm that Ultima operated a film studio and distribution operation at the scene of the attack, although the fact that Hill actually lived on the scene has not been verified. Hill is reportedly a six foot tall African American man who has been struggling to develop a full-fledged pornographic actor career.

The Los Angeles Police Department is said to be handling the investigation as well as a manhunt that appears to be widening in its scope. The police have yet to officially release the name of the dead victim who apparently passed away during efforts to treat a major wound to the torso. The nature of the wounds suffered by the other two victims has not been released as well as their names.

Media reporters have attempted to contact the principles of the Ultima company for comment, but so far they have not been reached for comment. Internet sites seem to portray Ultima as a small porn outlet that specializes in fetishes and the female domination of males.

More sad news today: Andrew Koppel, Former ABC News Nightlight Host Ted Koppel’s son, died reportedly after a day of drinking.
Koppel, 40, commenced his day of drinking at Smith’s Bar & Restaurant, where he met Russell Wimberly, a 32-year-old waiter at the Midtown establishment. “There was a lot of alcohol. He didn’t take anything else [drugs] around me, and neither of us ate all day,” Wimberly said. The two later ventured uptown to the apartment of Belinda Caban, a friend of Wimberly’s. Koppel became unresponsive and stopped breathing. “When the ambulance came, they said he was dead,” said Caban. Koppel, who was an attorney with the city housing authority, is survived by his girlfriend and their baby daughter.
